I went to see Soulwax the other night with some old friends and some new ones. The event itself didn't go exactly as planned; although the doors were supposed to open at 9:30, we received a call from a friend already there at 10, warning us not to come yet, since the house lights were on and the waitstaff were having some sort of meeting. Not a problem - we continued the pre-party for another hour, and were all thoroughly hyped up for the show by the time we hit the club at 11:30. I think it was around 1 or 1:30 when we realized that group we had paid to see had not yet appeared, and it was close to 2:00 when the announcement was made that they wouldn't. Somehow, we still ended up staying for at least another hour, until we stumbled home - some of us stumbling more than others.
The thing that really surprised me about the evening was how very natural the relationships between us all seemed. The friend who hosted the evening was one I had not seen since he was my date at a wedding... in 1993. The other old friend I had also not seen in far too long... but when I called them to let them know I was parked out front of the apartment, they ran down and hopped in the car and it seemed like we must see each other every weekend. Much later in the evening, as we left the club, we said goodbye to the friend who had called and warned us about the late starting. We hugged like old friends, despite having never met before.
The next morning, as I left my friends sleeping and drove home, I realized how rare an experience it can be to just pick up after so long...
...and now I've lost my train of thought. :( This blog would be much more frequently updated if I finished and published half of the posts I've started lately...
In other news, it's HAMMOCK WEATHER!
